96% of Ponce Health Sciences University med students get into residency programs

A total of 95.69% of senior medical students at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) were accepted into various medical residency programs in Puerto Rico and stateside, the school announced.

Of those, 37% found residency in Puerto Rico, while 63% were selected for programs in the continental United States.

“With an impressive initial match rate of 88.17%, followed by a significant increase to 95.69% after a second process called Supplementary Application Process (SOAP), … PHSU students have demonstrated their dedication and excellence in preparing for their future medical careers,” said Orlando Torres, head of the department of pediatrics and associate dean of student affairs at the PHSU School of Medicine.

The medical residency matching process, known as Match, is the percentage of students accepted into a specialty after completing a Doctor of Medicine in the competitive process of the National Residency Match Program.

The nationwide competition brings together all senior medical school students to compete for available residency slots. PHSU’s Match percentage of 95.69% means nine out of 10 students made a match.

“The diversity and breadth of specialties in which PHSU students obtained residencies reflect the depth of their medical preparation and aspirations,” officials said.

Among the most notable specialties are urology, dermatology, neurosurgery, surgery and radiology.

“These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, as well as the continued commitment of our faculty and staff to providing excellent, world-class medical education,” said Olga Rodríguez de Arzola, dean of the PHSU School of Medicine.
