Puerto Rico Multiple Sclerosis Center opens $500K facility in Caguas

In recognition of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month, the Puerto Rico Multiple Sclerosis Center Clinic unveiled its new 4,300-square-foot facility at HIMA Plaza in Caguas, following a $500,000 investment.

The center’s inauguration “marks a significant milestone” in its expansion of specialized care for individuals with multiple sclerosis and related disorders, officials noted.

The center is the only center, which is unique in Puerto Rico, offers an integrative, multidisciplinary approach to MS treatment and features an infusion center tailored to patient needs, said lead physicians José Ávila-Ornelas and Patricia de Jesús.

“We’re proud to be the only center in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean that has two neurologists sub-specializing in multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating conditions. This distinction reflects our unwavering commitment to medical excellence and the well-being of our patients,” stated Ávila-Ornelas.

The center adopts a “center without walls” model, working closely with other specialists to ensure patients receive the best possible management of their condition, they said.

“We believe in the importance of comprehensive and personalized care, and our new location and facilities will allow us to continue offering cutting-edge services to improve the quality of life of those who trust us,” said De Jesús.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system. It affects millions of people around the world. In the United States, it is estimated that about 1 million people live with MS, a higher prevalence in women.

While exact numbers vary in Puerto Rico, thousands are estimated to be living with the condition.
