Puerto Rico has nabbed the #1 spot as the ideal Caribbean location for destination weddings in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice poll, beating out locations such as St. Lucia, Aruba and Key West, Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Ingrid Rivera said Wednesday.

“Puerto Rico is more than a place of beautiful ideal spots for a ceremony outdoors, many of our hotels have customized packages, offers and expert professionals to help couples plan their dream wedding,” said Rivera.

“The convenience of easy air and sea access, modern facilities, varied options to please all taste and accommodate all budgets, and the fact that U.S. citizens do not require passport to travel to Puerto Rico, make us a perfect destination for your special day,” she said.

The niche weddings and honeymoons market of has a great potential for growth, she said, noting that the agency has crafted a marketing strategy to promote the island in the U.S. mainland and international markets to make Puerto Rico one of the favorite places for destination weddings.

The preferred months for weddings coincide with months considered as “low season” for Puerto Rico’s tourism industry, so promotional efforts are expected to increase visits, room nights, local jobs and create profits for local entrepreneurs, she added.

A panel of experts that includes editors of USA Today, editors of 10Best.com, travel experts and employees of other publications of the Gannett publishing house chose nominees for the 10Best Readers’ contest.
