Recently I read on Facebook a poorly researched story on Condé Nast Traveler magazine singing the praises of Chef Jose Andrés and his efforts to feed Puerto Rico. As a journalist and a communications strategist, I could tell immediately that it was a public relations effort after his heated controversy with FEMA over what was paid to his foundation.
Despite Puerto Rico’s ongoing fiscal crisis and allegations of corruption by enemies of Gov. Alejandro García-Padilla, business executives and foreign investors still perceive the Commonwealth as relatively clean by Caribbean standards.
Investigative reporting is a long-standing practice in journalism known for its all-consuming nature when it comes to time and resources. However, becoming involved in this type of exercise — which can be said is becoming a lost art — is not only a media outlet’s way of performing its civic duty, but ultimately makes great business sense.
Puerto Rico slipped one notch to 33rd place in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2013, but remains among the world’s cleanest countries in terms of levels of dishonesty in the public sector. In 2012, the island placed 32nd.
