Empresarios por Puerto Rico, an organization representing a broad spectrum of local businesses, unveiled Wednesday a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the island’s economy.

Initially, the plan calls for joining 600 local merchants to offer special deals and discounts on goods and services during key times of the year, including the day before Thanksgiving in an effort called “Orange Wednesday.”

This promotion will serve as a spearhead for the start of its new educational campaign “I shop local because…,” which will use the #VoyAldeAquíPorque hashtag, will promote sales at local businesses, entrepreneurship and consumer education.

By hosting a pre-Thanksgiving sales day, local businesses seek to draw consumers in with special sales and offers preceding Black Friday.

“Black Friday was a strategy to move accounting numbers from negative red to positive black. For us, the way to change our negative economy to a thriving one is by local business. That’s what ‘Orange Wednesday’ symbolizes,” said organization President Enid Monge-Pastrana.

This initiative will involve some 600 pharmacies, hardware stores, florists, supermarkets, wholesalers, cooperatives, among other businesses that continue to join the islandwide effort.

“That day, local trade will offer significant discounts on their products and services. Consumers will be able to identify retailers through their orange-colored promotions featuring the campaign tagline,” Monge-Pastrana said.

Empresarios por Puerto Rico — founded in 2013 — also will join the “Global Business Incubation Day” along with Emprende Aquí, encouraging local companies to adopt microenterprises that incubate their businesses, on Dec. 8. Another initiative on the group’s agenda is participating in the “Gift Locally” movement, promoting buying Christmas gifts from local merchants. In January, the group will participate in the “Celebro con el de Aquí” initiative that will wrap-up the holidays with a large product fair, music and local crafts.

“In Empresarios por Puerto Rico, we’re convinced that strengthening local businesses is not the only solution for the recovery of our economy, but the first,” Monge-Pastrana said.

“Today we have reasons to support local, to evolve from here and celebrate what unites us to transform the island,” she said.

Cuenten con nosotros para colocar a la venta productos de la agricultura local, sustentable, orgánica y agro-ecológica. Cada vez que alguien compra directo del agricultor está apoyando la economía local.
