Starbucks Coffee is marking its 10th anniversary in Puerto Rico with the opening of its 20th coffee shop at the Plaza Las Américas mall in Hato Rey. The store that opened Monday is located on the second level of the shopping center’s west hallway, facing Coach.

The newest location created 26 jobs, pushing the number of Starbucks “associates” in Puerto Rico to 330.

“We are excited to open our store in Plaza Las Américas, because we know that our customers frequently visit the largest mall in the Caribbean. By having a Starbucks in Plaza, we will have a new opportunity to connect, laugh and share with our customers every day, even if just for a moment,” said Cheryl L. Harvey, general manager of Starbucks in Puerto Rico.

One of the features that distinguish the Plaza store is the only shop in the chain to have earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, company officials said. Because equipment and materials were reused in keeping with LEED standards, the investment to set up the store came in at $350,000, said Virginia Rivera, marketing and category lead for Starbucks Puerto Rico.

The 943-square foot space was designed to transport guests to the golden age of the plantations, to pay tribute to all the process that is used to create the ancient coffee beverage.
