For the next two weeks, parts of San Juan will become the backdrop for the filming of “22 Jump Street,” a Hollywood production that is expected to pump $9 million into the Puerto Rican economy.

Filming starts Saturday and will run through Dec. 16, during which 300 local technicians and 500 extras will be hired to work on the big-screen project, Demetrio Fernández, executive director of the Puerto Rico Film Commission said Friday.

The production team of “22 Jump Street” — which stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube — includes 200 technicians that are staying in some 250 rooms in three hotels in San Juan, which will generate about 2,500 room nights. The filming will also have an indirect economic impact on the tourism sector and the commercial areas of Old San Juan, Condado and Santurce, he said.

“My experience filming on ‘Fast 5’ in Puerto Rico was so positive, I have been waiting for an opportunity to return to this beautiful island for filming,” said the producer of “22 Jump Street,” Neal H. Moritz. “Besides the visuals of the island looking breathtaking on the big screen, the local people are always such a pleasure to collaborate with. We sincerely thank the people of Puerto Rico for already welcoming us with opens arms, and look forward to a successful upcoming ‘22 Jump Street’ shoot.”

Several government agencies besides the Film Commission will be playing a role in the film, including the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority which will allow the production crew to use the heliport atop the agency’s Santurce building to film action scenes with two helicopters on Dec. 13-15.

Other agencies that will collaborate with the project are the Puerto Rico Police Department, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Highway Authority and the San Juan Municipal Police, Fernández said.

“22 Jump Street” is the 30th film project done on the island since January, which include movies, television, and live shows, that have injected more than $53 million combined into the Puerto Rican economy.

Traffic pattern changes and closed streets
As part of the filming, the Puerto Rico Film Commission announced the closings of several areas in San Juan over the next few days. Old San Juan traffic will be affected tomorrow, when Norzagaray and Tanca Streets will be closed starting at 6 a.m. Sunday traffic in Puerta de Tierra will also be altered, as Constitution Avenue will remain closed during the same time period.

Sundays’ filming schedule calls for closing Ponce de León Avenue from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from San Juan Bautista Street to the Dos Hermanos Bridge. Drivers are encouraged to take Fernández Juncos Avenue as an alternative route.

On Dec. 11, the Dos Hermanos Bridge will remain closed during the same schedule, to get into the Condado area. The outbound lane will open, intermittently during the day. The alternate route to get into Condado is through R.H. Todd Avenue.
