Scientific Games Corp. announced Tuesday it has landed an eight-year contract with the government of Puerto Rico to run the electronic lottery, known as “Lotería Electrónica.”
Jamaican security officials are cracking down on telephone and Internet lottery scams that prey on elderly Americans, then drain their victims’ bank accounts to finance drug trafficking and other illegal activities that fuel violence throughout the Caribbean island.
Puerto Rico lottery players now have a new option through which to buy their tickets: brightly colored, free-standing, self-service ticket vending machines recently installed at several big box retailers in the San Juan metropolitan area. Lottery officials are betting the machines could generate close to an extra $1 million a year in gaming sales, this media outlet learned Tuesday.
In keeping with the growth in popularity generated by social networks, the Electronic Lottery of Puerto Rico recently established an official page on Facebook, through which its “friends” can see the winning numbers for all drawings as soon as they are drawn.
Tonight’s lotto drawing is one of the biggest in island history, promising the winner a whopping $24 million prize. However, the chances of hitting it big are one in 9.3 million, María Victoria León, deputy secretary of the Electronic Lottery, said Wednesday.
